ORIGIN STORY AND HOW TO PLAY

Ratstar came about while playing a classic dice game that founder Kinchasa’s great grandmother taught him as a young gun called “Smoke.” It’s fun and can be played with 2 to several players. Read on about how to play with your degenerate friends.

6 DICE, PAPER & PEN

Get a hold of 6 dice, paper and pen to jot down score. The object of the game is to roll 10,000 pts. Roll a die to see who goes first (highest starts). You need to keep rolling till you get 1,000 minimum to get on the board, then you can keep lower scores on later rolls. When rolling, 1’s and 5’s are “counters” on their own, 100 pts and 50 respectively. You need at least one “counter” each roll to keep going, which gets set aside and your roll the remainder. If all are counters you get to/have to roll again and then can stop.



ROLLING & SCORING

Rolling 1’s and 5’s keep you alive and rolling, but are a slow way to win. You want to roll three of a kind in a single roll, for example three-4’s is 400 pts, three-5’s is 500 pts. However, three-1’s is worth 1000 pts. If you roll FOUR 3’s in a single roll it’d be 300 but doubled, so 600 and doubled again if you’re super lucky and get FIVE 3’s in a single roll it’d be 1200 and so on. You can also roll a SMALL straight 1 – 5 or 2 – 6 as well as a LARGE straight 1 – 6, 500 and 1000 pts respectively. If you roll ALL 1’s it’s an instant win.



WINNING RATSTAR

Playing Ratstar (formerly Smoke) is largely a game of luck but there is some strategy involved. Say you roll all 6 dice and you get a 1 and a 5. You could chalk up 150 pts and roll the remainder OR just set aside one “counter”, the 1 for 100 points and stand a greater chance of rolling three of a kind or a small straight with the rest. Finally, if you roll and don’t get any counters you lose your turn and punctuate it by saying “ah rats!” (let’s bring it back) First to 10,000 pts yells “RATSTAR!!” and the others can rebuttal one turn.
